Autumn

Today is the autumnal equinox, the balance point between dark and light that we hit at the midpoint between seasons. Leaves have started to turn colors all over our hemisphere, some bright enough to bring out “peepers” who appreciate the pageantry of the season. And some, like in my part of the hemisphere, simply falling as they turn yellow and brown. Not saying that there are not some fantastic trees who do the season well; just that most of the leaves that fall in Southern California are yellowish and tan and brown.

It doesn’t smell like Fall here – not the Fall of New England, that I grew up with – the crisp and sweet smell of decaying leaves that wafted up and enveloped you as you sloshed through the piles on your way to school or work.

But the way that time seems to speed up, that is the same. For some reason the holidays always seem to be in a hurry at this time of year. Halloween to Thanksgiving to Christmas or Hannukah or Kwanzaa and New Years – then it seems like time pauses for a breath and things are slow again until Memorial Day in May and the wind up starts again. Time. So subjective. Maybe I am the only one who feels the slingshot effect of Fall to Winter.

Whichever the case may be, I wish you a Happy Autumn. May the season bring you bounty as you harvest the efforts you have sown through the year. May your holidays be filled with love and joy and the people who matter to you.

I, for one, am going to fasten my seatbelt for the end-of-year speedway, and try to keep up.
