It is a slippery slope when you start to give advice… sometimes it is hard to stop, once the floodgates are open. And sometimes it becomes an exercise in futility when people who ask for advice then ignore it and you watch in a combined emotional atmosphere of horror and “I-told-you-so”.
Parents suffer this most often, on a daily basis. Teachers do as well. And people whom others have dubbed “experts” also get to experience this mixed set of feelings – often.
The phenomenon is so common that a meme word was created to cover it. “Ask-holes”: people who ask you advice and then ignore it.
It also reminds me of the old adage: “You can lead a horse to water…” and it’s modern alternative ending – “but you can’t make it think”.
Just some observations for the day… (disclaimer: no horses were meant to be maligned in this post, horses are amazingly intelligent and usually don’t ask for advice).
